York – A Guide To Flat Racecourses

York Racecourse

York Racecourse is a galloping, flat left handed track. It is a pear-shaped track where the circuit is around seventeen furlongs in circumference and has been listed as a grade one venue. There are three group one races that take place per season; The Juddmonte International for three years and older and is raced over ten and a half furlongs, The Yorkshire Oaks, a race for three year old fillies which is run over a mile and a half and finally The Nunthorpe Stakes over five furlongs for horses aged three years and older. All three group one races take place during the “Ebor Festival” a four-day meeting in the month of August.

There are in total a further 17 pattern races outside of the group one races that take place at the venue and is therefore considered one of our premier racetracks in the UK.
The draw over the straight course, which accommodates sprint races from five to six furlongs can be important but unfortunately, it is not always clear where the advantage may lie and it can vary from meeting to meeting, or even from one day to the next, and observing how races are being run can give you an advantage when it comes to where your betting is concerned.
A low draw used to be favoured in races over a distance involving going round a bend but in more recent years some of the big field races have seen the jockeys elect to come down the middle of the track, which to some extent allowed horses who were drawn very wide to have some sort of chance which would not usually be the case if they stick to the far rail from the final turn and into the home straight.
