Who Does CR7 think he is, the best Player in the World?

The dream of the Spanish league title has almost been extinguished for Real Madrid after defeat in Saturday’s derby against Atletico. Cristiano Ronaldo cut a dejected figure at the end of the match and he could not hide his anger at the post-match press conference.

SIMPLY THE BEST

The damage inflicted by Atletico Madrid to their city rivals in their 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu last weekend looks to be irreparable. Despite the efforts of one outstanding footballer, Los Blancos sit 12 points behind bitter rivals Barcelona and four behind Saturday’s opponents; suddenly, not only are Real not the best team in Spain, they’re not even the best team in the capital. Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has a theory why this is – In a post-match press conference he responded angrily to questioning by offering this simple explanation; “If my teammates were all at my level, we would be top of the league.” If the rest of the Real Madrid squad were on Ronaldo’s level, they would be the greatest team the world had ever seen.

TIRELESS WORKRATE FOR LITTLE REWARD

People will point straight away to a couple of golden chances spurned by the club’s talisman in the second-half on Saturday, but to criticise a player who, despite all his fame and fortune, never allows his effort on the field to drop below 100%, would be harsh indeed. Admittedly, Saturday’s statistics were below average for CR7, only seven shots throughout the entire game, only three on target, but the frustration shown by Ronaldo in that interview spoke volumes; not only at the sheer dejection of seeing Spain’s biggest prize heading towards Catalunya once again, but for a footballer, unable to give anymore in his seemingly one-man quest to haul back Barcelona’s lead at the top. The 32-time winners of the domestic league championship are now a massive *41.00 on the best football betting sites to reclaim it this season.

FULL FOCUS ON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGU

With qualification into the last eight of this season’s premier club competition as good as confirmed (Real currently have a 2-0 advantage over AS Roma with the home leg to come), the priority must now surely switch to a competition they have won more than any other club. Ronaldo himself has lifted the trophy twice, once with Manchester United and once with his current employer, and the hunger for a third winners medal (currently quoted at *6.00 on the betting exchanges) ahead of the European Championships this summer, is as insatiable as ever. There is of course, the small matter of El Clasico part two (or should we say Messi v Ronaldo part two) at the Camp Nou on April the 2nd and a chance to banish the memory of their 0-4 hammering in the capital last November, but the future remains uncertain for the man from Santo Antonio, with daily updates about where his next destination will be; at this moment in time, he probably wishes he was playing alongside teammates of the same calibre as his current boss Zinedine Zidane.
