Game Preview

It’s only Week 7, but already this feels like a crossroads of the season for both troubled Roma and Inter.

The fixture planners in the Italian FA saved the best to last this week, with the capital hosting two sides with Champions League ambitions on Sunday evening. Despite some eye-catching results already this term, both clubs have dropped points in unnecessary games, leaving them cut adrift from Napoli and Juventus. A loss for either side here and they could be as much as eight points off the pace.

On the other hand, a victory here against a rival will provide the catalyst for a run of results that could reignite Scudetto ambitions.

The Giallorossi have been frustratingly inconsistent on their travels, but won all their home games by wide margins, including Thursday’s 4-0 hammering of Astra Giurgiu, inspired by 40-year-old Francesco Totti’s assists.

Just as the Nerazzurri seemed to turn a corner this season, they are sliding back into their old pattern. Held at San Siro by Bologna, some truly embarrassing defending saw them crash 3-1 at Sparta Prague on Thursday evening.

Expect a great deal of action and industry on the wings, with each club possessing a bona fide match winner out wide in Ivan Perisic and Mohamed Salah. Playing against opponents lacking in defensive prowess in the full-back areas, this pair will arguably be the fundamental playmakers for their managers.

Meanwhile, Roma have been playing Bruno Peres in the unaccustomed position of left-back in order to accommodate Alessandro Florenzi over the other side. Both are not natural in those areas and when you take into account the injuries in central defence to Thomas Vermaelen and Antonio Rudiger, Roma’s defensive solidarity looks non-existent heading into the weekend.

Serie A’s in-form striker Mauro Icardi will look to capitalise on this, with the captain an early favourite for the Capocannoniere. The Argentinian has always proved to be deadly when given the ball in offensive areas but the Nerazzurri’s lack of creativity in midfield last term inevitably led to the 23-year-old failing to break the 20 goal mark. The signings of Joao Mario and Ever Banega have fixed this major issue, with Icardi averaging a goal and 4.2 shots per game in his first six Serie A contests.

This makes De Boer’s men over-reliant on the former Sampdoria man and if he has an off day that will make Roma favourites under the lights of their home stadium. With Geoffrey Kondogbia set to be dropped for youngster Assane Gnoukouri and Joao Mario requiring a late fitness test, Radja Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman should excel. Expect an exhibition of attacking intent and defensive absence to cap the weekend off.
