Venus Williams and Serena Williams have been two of the most recognizable names in tennis for over 15 years, with the two sisters winning several Grand Slam titles in their illustrious careers. Currently, Serena is the best player in the sport, while Venus has faded away, but Venus made it to the quarterfinals of the US open where she faced her sister in a great match that Serena was heavily favored in by tennis betting experts.
Serena Williams’ Fast Start
Serena Williams is clearly the better of the two Williams sisters right now. If she wins the US Open, she will have won all four of this year’s Grand Slam tournaments, as well as five in a row dating back to last year’s US Open. It was clear that this meant a lot to her during this match, as she got out to a dream start against Venus.
The top ranked player in women’s tennis, Serena, defeated Venus Williams 6-2 in the first set, breaking her older sister twice to grab a one set advantage in this best of three match. Once broken in that set, Venus seemed to lose focus for its remainder, allowing Serena to pick up that second break to clinch the set quickly. Venus, however, regained that focus as soon as the second set began.
Venus Williams’ Comeback
In the second set, Venus Williams dominated Serena in shocking fashion, taking that second set by a 6-1 margin. Serena made some key mistakes early in this set to allow Venus to break her serve, from which she could not recover in the set. This leveled the match at one set apiece, with Venus Williams on the verge of scoring a massive upset against her sister. Serena was sure to turn that around quickly in the third set.
Serena Williams Finishes The Job
With one set separating both Venus and Serena Williams from a berth in the semifinals of one of the biggest tournaments in tennis, Serena took charge, winning the third set 6-3 to finish off the match. She did a great job of handling Venus’ attempts at bigger serves in the final set, and forced Venus to move toward the net, which she simply can’t do well at this stage of her career.
Serena normally tempers her emotions during matches against Venus, but this match was an exception. She was vocal and performed several celebratory fist pumps when things went her way, another example of just how much this tournament and a potential sweep of 2015’s Grand Slam events mean to her.
After the match, Serena Williams also spoke very highly of her sister, saying that the match against Venus was the toughest she’d experienced in a long, long time.
Next up for Serena Williams will be Italy’s Roberta Vinci. Williams will be a heavy favorite to win the match, and tennis tipsters will expect her to advance to the final without much trouble at all. But with the weight of history on her shoulders, a collapse is not out of the realm of possibility for the greatest player in recent tennis history.
