Wolverhampton Racecourse
Wolverhampton Racecourse is a tight, flat left handed track. It is an oval shaped course where the circuit is about one mile in circumference and has been listed as a grade four venue. There is one pattern race that takes place per season, The Lady Wulfruna Stakes which is a listed event run over seven furlongs and is for horses aged four years and older.
The course has gone through many changes since it first came into full operation as an all-weather track in 1993. It was the first floodlit course when evening racing was introduced at the track and has had three different forms of synthetics as a racing surface.
It was first installed with a Fibresand surface which they raced on for just over ten years. A Polytrack surface was then introduced, in part due to some drainage issues in maintaining the Fibresand surface to an acceptable racing standard but in early 2014 that surface also proved unsatisfactory with the top composition often providing kickback during races. In August 2014 a new Tapeta surface was laid out for the first time on any UK course.
Trainers and Jockeys have been praising the surface which is considered to be more forgiving on a horse’s joints and tendons. There doesn’t appear to be any pace bias as horses if good enough can either win racing prominently or coming from off the pace, making it a very level playing field for all concerned.
The track is fairly sharp in nature with tight bends, so the draw in sprint races is still important, usually favouring those drawn low to middle but it is possible for a good horseman to get a good slot from the starting gate which is a more paramount consideration in races from five to six furlongs.
