Newmarket – A Guide To Flat Racecourses

Both the Rowley and July Newmarket courses are galloping, with uphill gradients and are right handed tracks. Newmarket is considered the HQ of flat racing, with many of the top training establishments based near and around the town.

The Rowley course is used in April to May, and from September to October. The July course as the name implies is used in July, both courses are listed as grade one tracks as they are both host group one races.

The Rowley course entertains two of the five classic races, namely the 2000 Guineas and the 1000 Guineas which is run the following day and both take place in the month of May. There are five other group one races that is run on the rowley mile.

The fillies Mile for two year olds that may have aspirations to be classic contenders for the following year, a comment that applies to runners that participate in the Cheverley park Stakes except that race si run six furlongs. For two year old colts, the two group one races are the Middle Park Stakes (six furlongs) and the Dewhurst Stakes raced over seven furlongs. The only other group one race run on the course is the Sun Chariot Stakes open to three year old fillies and mares which is raced over a mile. There are another 25 pattern races that are run throughout the season.

The July Course holds two group one races, the Falmouth Stakes which is run over a mile and is open to fillies and mares and the July Cup over six furlongs and is open to three year olds and older, you will often find the winner of this race being named champion sprinter in Europe. There are a further seven patten races taking place during this one month of racing at this track.
