Jockey Ruby Walsh
Ruby Walsh is a multiple Irish Champion jump jockey who is retained by the biggest establishment in Ireland, the yard belonging to Willie Mullins.
His father is former jockey and now trainer Ted Walsh whilst his sister is Katie Walsh who is married to trainer Ross O’Sullivan, so the family is embedded in the fabric of racing.
He is possibly the only jockey that has been compared to Sir Anthony McCoy favourably. it is often debated who is the better, numerically there is no doubt but in terms of winning on the biggest stage and actual horse riding ability there is but it is very much a subjective matter.
He simply has achieved a lot in his career and that is still likely to continue despite being in his late thirties. His talent was apparent pre-millennium by winning the Irish Amateur title twice before turning professional.
He is also the very few jockeys to win the grand national on his first attempt, only aged 20, he then raised that achievement by winning the Irish grand national in the same year completing a notable double in the process.
If we thought that couldn’t be bettered we were wrong, in the 2004/2005 season he won three of the four Nationals and just failing to complete the quartet by a short head in the Scottish national.
His strengths, is the delivery of a horse over a fence or hurdle for that matter, it just looks effortless on most occasions, even horses with a history of bad jumping can be found to show improve skills over an obstacle when he is on board and by getting them to relax and find a right stride in their approach is part key to his successes.
