Jockey Paul Mulrennan
Paul Mulrennan is an Irish jockey who can usually be found riding on the northern circuit as that is where he is based.
He became a jockey on the advice provided to him by his school career adviser who suggested that as he was on the short side he should try his hand on becoming a jockey, he initially wanted to be a Gaelic footballer but decided to take the advice on board and hasn’t looked back since.
Admittedly, it took him awhile to lose his claim, having started his racing career in 2000 it was only four years later that he rode out his claim. That takes a lot of steely determination given the length of time and he should be complimented for his efforts in riding the storm during that period of his working life.
The records will show that he has yet to win a classic but he did actually win India’s Calcutta derby, so technically that is a box he can tick.
2014 was the first time he recorded over a century of winners (104) he has since repeated that feat, this time, last year when he beat that figure with 108 wins from 934 rides representing a win strike rate of around 12%
His biggest successes to date have come in the same race with the same horse on two occasions, that being Mecca’s Angel who won the Nunthorpe in both 2015 and 2016 during York’s Tote Ebor Festival.
Other notable achievements include the tally of winners recorded in his champion apprentice winning year with 81 winners, only one other jockey has recorded more winners as an apprentice in the modern post war era.
In becoming champion jockey twice means he currently holds the record as being the only northern based jockey to win the title more than once.
He can comfortably ride at a light weight due to his height and currently rides at around 8 stone and 2 pounds mark.
At the time of writing, he has won 21 pattern races during his career.
The trainers who provide him with the most rides are Mick Easterby and Michael Dods, with James Given and Kevin Ryan providing a valuable supporting cast in providing further winners
Being a northern based jockey means most of his winners are going to come from tracks with that region, in term of winners Ayr tops the list with 73, close behind are Beverley, Newcastle, Redcar and Thirsk.
Here are some worthwhile stats for betting purposes.
