Chelsea v Napoli – A Champions League Preview from Anton Ebdon

Roberto Di Matteo oversaw a win in his first FA Cup game in charge and also got his side to go out and win their first Premier League match since the sacking of poor old AVB. Now the Bues face visiting Napoli looking to overturn a 3-1 deficit. It’s not impossible, but it is bloody difficult. There may be a 2 goal deficit to overturn but Chelsea did themselves a favor by at least getting an away goal. That means a 2-0 win here would do it, but they have to chase the game from the start to do that, and Napoli are dangerous on the break, meaning things might not be so clear cut. This past weekend Chelsea hosted Stoke and had the benefit of a man advantage for about 70 mins, but failed to shine. Mata, who was left on the bench, came on to set up Drogba for his 100th league goal for Chelsea but with Chelsea winning just 1-0 at home against a Stoke side weaker than Napoli and playing with 10 men, I fail to be impressed. Should Napoli score even once, Chelsea would need 4, and that just ain’t gonna happen. I know Cahill and Terry were playing this weekend, and that helps, but when Napoli pour forward it will be hard to stop them on the counter, led by Lavezzi, Cavani and Maggio. Remember, this Napoli side beat Manchester City in Italy and also grabbed a draw in Manchester.

Unlike Chelsea, Napoli come into this one in good form. In Serie A, they have won 5 straight games, and while Chelsea struggled to just 1 goal against 10 men, Napoli were scoring 6 themselves. Chelsea are always going to be at a danger of conceding. Bear in mind Chelsea have not won any of their last 5 knockout games at Stamford Bridge, losing to Manchester United and Inter Milan, while being held by Liverpool, Barcelona and Copenhagen.

I don’t think Chelsea can hold off Napoli, but Both Teams To Score and overs have been bet down to silly levels. Since I see Napoli scoring, I’ll have a gamble on how I think the game will pan out and take the visitors to score more than once.
