In Spain, it is called El Clasico – the most anticipated rivalry in all of La Liga football between Real Madrid vs Barcelona. Whether it’s a regular season La Liga match, a League cup match or even a chance encounter in a UEFA competition – every time Real Madrid and Barcelona meet each other – it is considered an El Clasico as the bitter rivalries between the two clubs is one of the best known in the world.
In the 215 times these sides have met, Real Madrid has won 86, FC Barcelona has won 84 and there have been 45 draws. And while Real Madrid is seen to be slightly ahead on the win count historically, the story has been different in recent years as Barcelona has been dominating La Liga with five La Liga titles since the 2004 season and have gone three consecutive since 2008. Barcelona also has had three Champions League titles since 2005 among other important silverware.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, has lost some of its shine and their former reign as the most reputable club in Spanish football and in all Europe has been dented by Barcelona’s recent success and has not been able to duplicate its former glory days of dominance. The painful truth for Real Madrid is that Barcelona has destroyed them over and over again the past few years. In their last 6 La Liga clashes, Barcelona have won 5 times and the most recent result that favored Real Madrid was a 1-1 draw. The last time Real Madrid won an El Clasico during the La Liga season was back in May 2008. In last season’s UEFA Champions League, Barcelona knocked out Real Madrid in the semi-finals with a 3-1 aggregate win.
The only time Real Madrid saw victory was a 1-0 Copa Del Ray championship match in the 2010-2011 season. However, that trophy fell from the second deck of a bus during a victory parade and was shattered.
Will Real Madrid ever get to dominate Barcelona, or will Barcelona continue its winning ways? We will find out on December 11, 2011 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. What is certainly exciting about the El Clasico is that it brings together the biggest and most expensive talents in Spanish football. Big names like Lionel Messi, David Villa, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas are rostered for Barcelona while Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema, Mesut Ozil and Gonzalo Higuain are among the bigwigs in Real Madrid. All these names are certainly capable of scoring to book a win.
Betting opportunities in this clashdown? Hmm.. I haven’t seen a draw for a long time between those two teams, so maybe the time for one has come (@ around 3.60) but it will be a high scoring draw in my opinion so another opportunity here for you is to take over 2.75 goals in match @ around 2.00.
