Atlético Madrid V SSC Napoli, Audi Cup, Tuesday 1st August
Our look at some of the big pre-season friendlies taking place ahead of the big kick-off to the European season with the Audi Cup, which is a pre-season tournament played every season in the Allianz Arena, which is of course Bayern Munich’s home. But it’s not Bayern we are looking at today as the focus of our attention is the game between Atletico Madrid and Napoli.
Atletico Madrid have been rather hampered this pre-season by a transfer ban which runs until January, so of course this has meant that it’s been very quiet on the comings and goings front for Los Rojiblancos. Vitolo has arrived from Sevilla, but he will be on loan at Las Palmas until January, and Diego Costa also looks to be heading home to the capital but again he won’t be seen until January because of that transfer ban.
For Napoli, on the other hand, it’s been about keeping hold of a lot of their star names, as the club were shook by Gonzalo Higuaín departure last summer to Juve. So they have been successfully hanging on to their talent so far, making a couple of addition in Adam Ounas and Mário Rui, while Nikola Maksimović and Marko Rog have made their registrations permanent.
This summer Atletico Madrid have only had one pre-season game of note to date, which was against the Mexican side Toluca and that game ended in a 0-0 draw. Napoli have had a few domestic pre-season games, the most high-profile of which was their recent 1-1 draw with Chievo Verona, so that’s only two goals in a total of two games for these two sides, which we are going to use to inform our betting this time round.
Domestically both teams don’t begin their league campaigns until the weekend of the 19th August. However, an important consideration here is the fact that Napoli have a Champions League qualifier, the first leg of which will be played a few days before on the 15/16th August. So for that reason we expect Napoli to be slightly ahead in their preparations and intensity, but I think the order of the day here will be for both clubs to avoid any injuries and get a good workout, but not to commit too greatly so as to risk players ahead of the big kick-offs, especially for Napoli as that Champions League qualifier is all-important for shaping their season.
So we are going to go for a draw on the match odds, and that looks really good value at 3.56 with Marathonbet. Again because Napoli will be slightly ahead in their preparations, we don’t expect them to lose here so you could go slightly safer and take Napoli +1, which is 1.54 with 10bet. That looks a pretty solid bet to take, although the odds are pretty short as you would expect.
Looking at under 2.5 goals, I spoke about the lack of goals in their pre-season games so far, so this bet makes sense at 2.25 also with Marathonbet. And if you are feeling brave, you could push those odds out on a correct score. 1-1 is 7.25, that’s also with 10bet – it’s a braver bet but looks the most likely on the correct score front.
The Audio Cup continues with the other semi-final featuring hosts Bayern and Liverpool, with the winner of that game facing off against the winner of this game in the final, with the two losers also meeting in order to maximise the runout.
