Rugby Union Betting – The Basics

In this article, I’ll try to give you the basics to bet on rugby union.

The most important bets you will find in rugby union are handicap betting, total points in the game, and winner of the game, when the odds are high enough to avoid the handicap line.

The most difficult thing in rugby union betting is to find a good compromise between bookmakers that will offer you a large range of competitions and type of bets, and a bookmaker that will allow you to place big stakes or that will not limit you when you will be in a winning rush, because rugby union is a minor market compared to football, or US competition.

For example, a bookmaker like Paddypower offers you a lot of competitions, with a lot of bets on games, but will limit you quickly if you win any  money.

Bookmakers like Ladbrokes, William Hill, or Bet365 allow you to bet on different competitions, whether they are major like big competitions in Europe (Top14, Magners League, Aviva Premiership) or Southern Hemisphere (Super Rugby), or minor ones, like Currie Cup (South African championship), ITM Cup (New Zealand championship), or Churchill Cup (minor international competition). These three bookmakers also accept winners, and they usually won’t limit you too quickly if you win money from them.

Bookmakers like Pinnaclesports, SBOBET, or 5dimes are usually not covering the minor competitions but will offer standard bets on major ones, with good stakes. They will not limit you if you win money, but their highest stake will be available only few hours before the beginning of the event you want to bet on.

As a consequence, the best thing to do if you want to bet on rugby union is to have an account on at least two of the three biggest bookmakers in term of number of competitions and type of bets (Ladbrokes, William Hill, Bet365), and to have an account on at least two bookmakers with minor markets, but with highest stakes (Pinnaclesports, 5dimes, etc…).

It is important to have at least four accounts when you bet on rugby union because handicap lines, or total points can be different from one bookmaker to another. Lines are not fixed, and you don’t have standard lines like “over 2.5” in football. A total or a handicap line can vary, and it is important to have different bookmakers to allow you to bet on the most favourable one.

You also have to know that only few bookmakers will offer you what we call alternative bets on a given game, like half-time/full-time winner, team to win both halves, number of tries scored in a game, teams total points, etc… Even if these kind of bets can be useful, they are not the most important ones, because they are usually limited in terms of the amount you can wage on them.

I hope this article will now allow you to understand why it is important to have different accounts to bet on rugby union. You are now ready to make huge profit on this sport, where the bookmakers are making mistakes, because it is not as well-known as football or US competitions.
