Pontefract – A Guide to Flat Racecourses

Pontefract Racecourse

Pontefract Racecourse is a left handed track with uphill gradients, especially from the final bend to the winning post where there is around a three furlong run in to the winning post. The circuit is about sixteen furlongs in circumference and is listed as a grade three track.

The course only has four pattern races, all of which are listed class in grade, and take place from June to October, oddly enough three of those four races are only open to fillies and mares whilst the one remaining pattern race is for two year olds only.

Another interesting anomaly, is that the course does host one of the longest flat staying races in Europe, over a distance of 21.5 furlongs, the race is often referred to as the Pontefract Marathon Handicap. One observation noted regarding this race, is that since 2003, if you had backed every runner to equal stakes that were competing in this event you would have achieved the following profit;

Pontefract Marathon Handicap (Record 2003-2017)

Bets: 161 Wins:15 Strike Rate: 9.32% P/L+55.25 (SP)

The course itself, does present various challenges for the thoroughbred. First of all, the bends are quite sharp and requires agility to negotiate at pace, whilst strength and conditioning is tested on parts where there are uphill gradients whilst remaining balance.

On decent summer ground you will often find horses that show good early speed from a low draw faring well, especially in sprint races and up to distance races of a mile.
