Newcastle (AW) – A Guide to Flat Racecourses

Newcastle Racecourse

Newcastle Racecourse is a stiff, galloping left handed track. In 2016 the flat turf course was replaced by an all-weather track, the venue still retains a jumps racecourse. There was a belief at the time that the north of the United Kingdom needed an all-weather track, and despite protest by a number of trainers, plans went ahead by Arena Racing Company who own fifteen courses on these shores.

Unlike the other courses with a synthetic surface in Britain, this is the only All-Weather track to have a straight course beyond five furlongs, which allows races to be run up to a mile on the surface from the start, the all-weather course has been listed as a grade four track.

There are two races of note, both of which take place in June, they are, the Chipchase Stakes (Group 3) run over six furlongs which are open to both three year olds and older horses and the Northumberland Plate (Class 2), a handicap race contested over two miles.

It is a very demanding course, especially if there is any headwind and any horse lacking in stamina will be found out sooner rather than later. Horses racing too quickly or freely from the start can often be punished late on, especially when the pace is more honest from the outset. Those of you that like to bet running in play, whether backing or laying can take advantage if your knowledge of a horse’s running style is strong.

There is less meaningful data when it comes to assessing trainer’s record in specific conditions as the course has only been in operation since May 2016.

So the list below is from limited data and should probably be viewed with a pinch of salt, or at least with precaution. Unless of course, you’re an optimist and regard the figures as the future potential to what could lie ahead.

Please note: Profit and Loss figures (P/L) is based on level stakes betting of one Euro per bet to SP.
