Kempton (AW) – A guide to Flat Racecourses

Kempton Racecourse

Kempton Racecourse is a flat right handed track. The course opened in 2006 and is raced on a Polytrack surface, it is also floodlit to accommodate evening racing. The all-weather course has been given grade three status, so there is no group one or group two races. However, they do entertain two three group races and two listed races.

One observation regarding the surface is that it can often ride on the slow side, certainly in relation to how often that occurs to the other two Polytrack courses, namely Lingfield and Chelmsford City.

When the surface is riding more testing it can be a good idea to see how the first few races are run to determine if there is a pace bias in existence which happens from time to time.

In two year old Non-Handicap races (ie; not a nursery event) it can pay to be interested in Ralph Beckett’s runners as his record below testifies.

Please note: Profit and Loss figures (P/L) is based on level stakes betting of one Euro per bet to SP.

Bets: 196 Wins: 45 Strike Rate: 22.96% P/L+84.61

Interestingly, the win strike rate gets more appealing the shorter the distance of the race becomes, 16% at eight furlongs, 24% at seven furlongs, 25% at six furlongs and 38% at five furlongs.

James Fanshawe runners in handicap races tend to go off well backed or remain solid in the market but to make use of possibly achieving better returns, it could pay to narrow it down to two type of race conditions, as highlighted below.

Any horse contesting a 4yo+ Handicap

Bets: 68 Wins: 17 Strike Rate: 25% P/L+33.06

Any three year old horse contesting a Handicap for three year olds only.

Bets: 81 Wins: 20 Strike Rate: 24.69% P/L+43.80

One trainer who’s runners are often not considered according to betting market expectations is Peter Haitt.

This is backed up by the ratio of profit made to the win strike rate, in 4yo+ Handicaps, see below.

Bets: 143 Wins: 15 Strike Rate: 10.49% P/L+75.83

So although he has a low win strike rate, his returns are healthy and if you like betting horses at attractive odds and don’t mind the inconsistency, then he could be one for your notebook.
