Haydock – A guide to Flat Racecourses

Haydock Racecourse

Haydock Racecourse is a galloping, flat left handed track. The course is around fourteen furlongs in circumference and is dual purpose course that accommodates both Flat and Jumps racing. The course has been assigned as grade two status with its feature event on the flat being the Haydock Sprint Cup, a group one race which takes place in September over six furlongs for three years old and older horses.

There are a further nine Pattern races on the flat throughout the flat season comprising of three group two races, four group three races, and two listed events. One of observation attached to my personal notes is that the official ground reports is not alway a true reflection of the state of the ground.

Some trainers like to use certain jockeys for specific racetracks, whether they are freelance or retained by the yard.

One trainer/jockey combination to note when they pair up for a runner here is Tom Dascombe and Richard Kingscote, here are the latest results of what has been achieved so far to date.

Please note: Profit and Loss figures (P/L) is based on level stakes betting of one Euro per bet to SP.

Bets: 281 Wins: 58 Strike Rate: 20.64 P/L+101.78

Profit reaches three figures, so a decent profit at a reasonable strike rate. The strike rate is better in handicap races 24% compared to around 16% but importantly both processes have proven to be profitable so far.

However, they are not only Trainer/Jockey combination worth following at the course. David O’ Meara and Daniel Tudhope, his retained rider, have proven on a number of occasions that success is not often far away as the results below show.

Bets: 117 Wins: 24 Strike Rate: 20.51 P/L+89.21

Coincidently, they also happen to have a better strike rate in handicap races then Non-Handicap races, the percentage ratio is 21 to 18 so less of difference.

For trainers worth noting in set parameters I would consider the following;

Kevin Ryan’s two year old runners in Non-Handicaps, from June to September as he usually brings them more forward from that time onwards, whilst after September they don’t tend to perform as well. My invested interest may be enhanced if they are available at double figures prices, depending on other mitigating circumstances.  Here are his stats below when applying those principles.

Bets: 67 Wins: 10 Strike Rate: 14.93 P/L+53.50
