Chester – A Guide To Flat Racecourses

Chester Racecourse

Chester Racecourse is a flat left-handed track with very tight turns. Racing at the course has been taking place from the 16th Century making it the oldest course in England that is still currently in use.

The track is unique in many ways, in particular, that horses have a shorter time span during a race before they have to negotiate a bend being such a small circuit in circumference.

The draw can play a significant role in the outcome of races and therefore horses drawn low tend to have a reasonable advantage, especially in sprint races on a quick surface (To a slightly lesser extent in underfoot conditions although it is still an advantage).

Runners drawn in the two lowest stall positions in sprint races have a win strike rate at around 21% whilst the next two stalls, namely three and four have a win strike rate of 14%, fifth stall at around 11% and the remaining post gate positions all below double digit percentage figures.

It is not uncommon to see some trainers withdrawing their horses if they happen to drawn out very wide and using a rule that needs to be amended in my opinion where they obtain a vet certificate to state that due to some kind of ailment they can no longer take part.  The more likely truth for withdrawal is based on the chances of success being much more remote than would be the case at other racecourses.

Just to emphasise how a low draw can be advantageous, you only have to look at races over the minimum distance race of five furlongs and take the lowest draw into account, that being drawn one and see what would have been achieved if backing every single horse from that stall to level stakes and not requiring to take any other factors into consideration.

Bets: 201 Wins: 43 strike rate: 21.39% P/L +26.81 (SP)

The profits generated are based on SP, so its more than likely that better profits would have been achieved with a best odds guaranteed bookmaker or betting via Betfair SP.

Considering that no further analysis is required, just using the draw the results are impressive, any skillful use of form analysis applied can possibly increase the win strike rate and reduce some potential losing bets further.
