Beverley – A Guide to Flat Racecourses

Beverley Racecourse

Beverley Racecourse is a right-handed track with testing gradients and a very stiff uphill finish. Beverley is just over eleven and a half furlongs long in circumference although there are two starting chutes attaching onto the main course.

A horse’s overall fitness is going to be severely tested on this course as the final three furlongs up the home straight is all uphill and five furlong races are even more testing despite these races being over the minimum trip as the starting point of the race is from the extension of the home straight, meaning it is uphill all the way from start to finish.

Horses that like to front run or race prominently near the front end of the pace can run better than generally expected, considering the test this course represents. Any distance races from 5f to 8.5f is where any small advantage may lie on a decent surface.

It is in part this reason why trainer Mark Johnston three-year-old horses tend to run well here, a fair amount of his stable runners like to race prominently and fitness is hardly an issue where his horses are concerned given the training regime he puts his horses through at home.

It is, therefore, no surprise to see his overall record with three-year-olds contesting handicaps for that age group (only) perform as well as they do, see his record below;

Bets: 232 Wins: 53 strike rate: 23% P/L +95.22 (SP)

Interestingly, his win strike rate with three-year-olds contesting a handicap open to older horses is also at 23% but shows a small loss of -1.04 (would be in profit if betting to fixed odds).

This is likely to be due to his three-year-olds going off shorter in price in general when racing against older aged horses due to the weight for age allowance which appears to be a heavier influence on the minds of how people bet in these circumstances.

Another trainer worth following at the track in specific circumstances is Kevin Ryan. Backing his horses of any age that contests any handicap containing three years old and older horses would see the following results.

Bets: 85 Wins: 20 strike rate: 23.53% P/L +70.58 (SP)

These results for Kevin Ryan can be improved further if restricting the above conditions to races from 5F to 10F and no further.

Bets: 75 Wins: 20 strike rate: 26.67% P/L +80.58 (SP)
