Navan – A Guide To Irish Flat Racecourses

Navan Racecourse

Navan Racecourse is a undulating, galloping left handed track. There is a stiff three and half furlong run in from the final bend to the winning post.

This testing circuit is about a mile and a half in circumference and there is an extended chute attached to the main course for races over five to six furlongs. It is a dual purpose venue hosting both Flat and Jump racing

They host about nine flat meetings a year (It can vary slightly year to year). There are four pattern races in total, three of which are listed class in status and one group three races, namely the Vintage Crop Stakes which is a staying event raced over a mile and six furlongs and is open for four year old and older, it is considered as one of Ireland’s main trial  for the Ascot Gold Cup and takes place in the month of May.

The draw is unlikely to be a main contributor should one under perform, if there is any slight advantage to be had then it would occur over the minimum trip of five furlongs, when we have extreme ends of the spectrum regarding the going conditions, ie; should the ground ride very fast or heavy then there maybe a slight advantage being drawn low middle to low. There doesn’t appear to be a draw bias as you go up in distance, regardless of the official going description.

With a very stiff uphill finish, close to reaching half a mile, does mean any horse that is suspect with the required stamina to get the trip will soon be exposed, therefore, being well conditioned from a fitness perspective is an attribute that is much desired when running round here.

Trainer Ger Lyons name has popped up again and not surprisingly its his record with a two year old at the course. Aidan O’Brien is naturally worth mentioning when he has a runner here in the specific conditions listed below
