A quick look at the different styles of horse racing tipsters.
Horse racing tipsters are not all the same, they do not all follow one style of betting, often they can be put into one of 3 types of professional tipsters but they can also blur the lines between groups.
The first group we are going to look at are those that follow the favourites
Of course, betting on favourites is exactly what bookies want you to do, the odds are low and payouts are too and with only around 1 in 3 favourites actually going on to win a race, you can see why the bookies love pople to bet "odds-on". Handicappers that give out favourites are not just trying to get you to part with their money though, they will analyse the races and find the favourites that actually go on to win, meaning that although you may not win big, you should win regularly, certainly regularly enough to make a profit.
The second group we need to look at are those that look for "Value" in their selections.
Bookies have to provide odds for hundreds of horses each day and mistakes can be made, sometimes a horses odds will not reflect an aspect that the careful tipster will pick up on, when the chances of the horse winning are actually higher than the odds suggest, then this becomes a "value" bet. It's a specialized way of betting and requires great attention to detail and an understanding of the stats and the likelihood of a horse defying the bookies odds to go on and win a race.
The third group we are going to look at are those that look for the long-odds selections.
Profitable tipsters that work in this area should be cherished, their ability to see something different in a horse is a talent that is hard to come by, an innate understanding of the sport is necessary and although it may mean having to pay careful attention to your staking plan, when a selection comes in, the pay out is worth all the risk you took before. If you're going to follow a long-odds tipster, be prepared to wait longer for a winner but expect larger pay outs when they do come along.
Of course, there are professional tipsters that have a foot in both camps, looking for value in favourites or long-odds selections. It's very much up to you which type of tipster you follow but expect the betting advice to be fairly consistently along one of those lines.
